Doris R. Conner

Board Trustee

Doris R. Conner is a Retired Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Coordinator of Central Harlem School Health Program of Harlem Hospital Center/Columbia University. She received her B.S. in Nursing from Hunter College of City University of New York, M.A. in Maternal and Child Health and Supervision from Teachers College, Columbia University, and her Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certificate from The Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

Doris began her career at New York Hospital, Department of Pediatrics, and left to join the staff of Morrisania Hospital as a Head Nurse and then Supervisor of Pediatric Ambulatory Care. She left Morrisania after four years to work in a special federally funded program at Roosevelt Hospital, Department of Ambulatory Pediatrics, and after several years left to join staff of Department of Pediatrics at Harlem Hospital Center where she worked for 31 years before retiring.

Doris is the 30 the President of Tau Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. She was initiated into Lambda Chapter in 1961 and is a Life Member and a Golden Member (50+ years). Prior to her term as President, she served as Hodegos (Hostess), Philacter, Second Vice President, Graduate Advisor, and First Vice President as well as Chairman of many committees. She is currently the Chapter’s Historian. She is Co-Author of the chapter history book published in 2014: The Legacy of the Pacesetters of Tau Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, A History of Timeless Service to the Harlem Community and Beyond.

Doris served on the regional level also. She served on the following North Atlantic Regional Committees:

  • 1995 Regional Conference – Public Meeting Soiree Committee Chairman
  • 1998 History Committee
  • Awards Committee – 1999-2006
  • Vendors Committee- Co-Chairman- 2000, 2005,2009

She served on the Rules Committee at the 1996 Boule and gave the Meditation on the 1997 Leadership Cruise.

Doris’ Community Service includes being an active member of Convent Avenue Baptist Church, she is currently the Coordinator of the Senior Citizens Advocacy and Monitoring Program (SCAMP) for members 80 years and older ( 250 ). She is a member of the church’s Columbia University In ToUCH program for health screenings and health education. She was formerly a member of other church ministries, Health, Food pantry, Yes We care.

She was a former member of the Board of Directors/Advisory Boards of:

  • Harlem Health Initiative, Harlem Youth AIDS Prevention Program
  • Harlem Hospital Center Family Friends Program (Secretary)
  • Addicts Rehabilitation Center (25 years, Secretary), Harlem Teen Abstinence Program

She is currently on Board of Directors of Harlem Hospital Center Auxiliary, First Vice President (and as Chairman of Archives and History Committee compiled and produced the book, Recalling 95 Years of Service, 1911-2006, Harlem Hospital Center Auxiliary, Incorporated), Central Harlem Senior Citizens Centers, Incorporated (Former President), The Tau Omega Charitable Trust Fund, Incorporated, President 2006-2014, Incorporator and currently Parliamentarian. Floor Captain in her Co-Op, Lifetime Member of N.A.A.C.P.
